Questions to Ask When Viewing a Property

Oakheart Property
Purchasing a property can feel like a complex and slightly overwhelming process. This can be especially true if you’re a first time buyer or if you’ve lived in your current home for a long time. It can be difficult to know what to look for when viewing a property and the right questions to ask.

Our team has compiled a list of some of the questions you might like to ask when viewing a property…

Has there been much interest in the property?

When viewing a property, it’s a good idea to find out if there’s been much interest in the property. If you think it has potential or you believe it’s your dream home, it’s important to ensure that you don’t miss out. Finding out how much interest the property has had can give you an idea of how you’ll need to act. You could also ask how long the property has been on the market for and find out the reasons behind this. Following on from this, it’s worth asking if there have been any offers put in on the house.

How long have the owners lived here?

Asking how long the current owner has lived in the property can reveal a number of things. If you find out that the owner has lived in the property since it was built, you may be able to discover if there has been any recurring problems or if there is work to be done. In a similar way, if the property has changed hands a number of times, it’s a good idea to find out why.

Why is the owner selling the property?

In a similar way to the above question, it’s worth asking why the current owner is selling the property. This can help put your mind at ease and reveal any issues that you should be aware of.

Are there any plans for developments that could affect us as homeowners?

It’s important to have an idea of how the local area might change in the near future. This is especially important if any planned developments could influence your decision on the property purchase. If you’re keen on buying a house that’s surrounded by fields offering stunning views and nature trails, then it’s likely that you’ll want this to remain unspoiled. So, if there’s a planning application for a development in this area, you’ll want to know sooner rather than later. It’s important to ask this question as early on as possible.

Do you have an idea of the seller’s ideal timeline? And Is there a chain?

It’s important to find out if there’s a chain and if the current owner has already found another home. This information will give you a better insight into the sellers position and how quickly you may be asked to move forward.

Can you tell me exactly what is included in the sale?

It’s beneficial to find out exactly what you’re getting. So, you might want to check that the property comes with the fixtures and fittings that are currently in it. Some sellers decide to include their garden shed, greenhouse or white goods in the sale. It’s also important to make sure you understand where the boundary of the property lies.

What are the neighbours like?

It’s always good to get as much information about the neighbours and the local area as you possibly can. If the current owner is positive about their neighbours, then that’s a great sign.
